In 1946 he was one of the founding members and one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council with voting rights. Also in 1949 he was one of the founding partners of NATO. It aligned itself with the United States during the so-called Cold War.
The United Kingdom acceded to the European Economic Community, commonly referred to by the British as the "Common Market", on January 1, 1973, in 1974 with the aim of renegotiating the terms of membership of the United Kingdom. Finally, in 1975 it was celebrated the stay of the United Kingdom in the European Communities.
